Liver and Skin Health

The connection may not seem obvious but our skin’s appearance often reflects our liver’s health. Skin issues are a symptom of a poorly functioning liver or the potential for future problems.

An overloaded liver cannot effectively break down toxins, so they have to be eliminated by other means – often through the skin.

The liver requires a high amount of antioxidants that you can find in vegetables, especially leafy greens. These antioxidants aid in protecting the liver cells against damage simultaneously detoxifying your blood. They also scavenge free radicals, preventing premature aging.  Between one and two vegetable salads per day is beneficial. (Make sure some vegetables are raw).

Eat Foods rich in Omega-3 Fatty Acids. By adding fish, flaxseed, and walnuts to your meals you will be helping smooth wrinkles and rehydrating weary skin.  This is as easy as keeping walnuts in your pantry or desk as a snack, ordering salmon when you go out for your next meal.

Boost your Zinc levels by Taking a Supplement. Many Americans are deficient in zinc, which is not good news for producing collagen. Collagen is a secret weapon for your skin.  It is great for maintaining a fresh, firm, and young appearance. You can increase your intake of zinc and your body will then be better equipped to produce beautifying collagen.

Give your Beverages a Boost with Fresh Ginger. This is both tasty and has anti-inflammatory properties, meaning it’s able to battle puffiness, redness and other annoying skin issues.

Balance Your Sugar Levels. Erratic sugar levels — often caused when you eat too many simple carbohydrates or skip meals — cause stress to your body wreaks havoc with hormones, and end up unfortunately on your face.

So, try to focus on adding fiber and protein to each snack and meal, making these meals important instead of overlooking them by going for a quick fix.

Consider Eating Less Dairy. Many of those who have chronic skin problems have found that many of their problems disappear after eliminating dairy from what they eat. You can try keeping a two-week journal for skin and food while cutting out all dairy from your diet. This might turn out great for your skin!

Have More Tomatoes. They are a rich source of lycopene, which is a compound that can lower your sunburn risk (and therefore, aging). Enjoy them in soups, salads, or sandwiches. Tinned tomatoes are good if you don’t have fresh ones handy.

Add Dark Chocolate to your Diet. Packed with of flavonoids, 80% cocoa or higher is best and can actually soften your skin leading to a more youthful look.

Leave the Skins on your Fruit and Veggies! These are a great silica source, which helps your skin, teeth, and bones. Simply scrub and rinse your potatoes, apples, and carrots before eating.  A great way to remove toxins from your body and cleanse your skin!

Take Care of Your Gut. Poor digestion leads to inflammation of your body including your skin. look after your gut by adding probiotic-rich foods and supplements to your diet.  Also, drinking lots of water (yes, again!), and eat plenty of fiber. Begin with — kimchi, kombucha, and kefir.

I will actually start taking ZMA supplements and I know that it has some form of zinc in it but I seriously don’t know whether this form produces collagen or not. What do you think and can I take ZMA for zinc deficiency?
